Carol Morgan Trio/Opening

The Carol Morgan Trio features the leader on trumpet, Harvie S on bass and Rich DeRosa on drums.Carol Morgan is one of the most unique voices on the trumpet to come along in years. Also gutsy. How many trumpet trio records are there? How many musicians on any instrument have the confidence to play without chordal accompaniment? That said, she is wonderfully supported by her bandmates. Harvie S is the perennial favorite NY bassist, heard on literally hundreds of recordings with jazz greats like Mike Stern, Sheila Jordan, and countless others. Drummer DeRosa is also quite accomplished, and uniquely musical. Perhaps his position as head of the arranging dept. at Julliard has something to do with that. Or is it the other way around? Regardless, the rhythm section lays down beautifully spacious, yet solid support for Carol's musings, and stretches out nicely on their own as well. Each of them contributes compositions, and those are supplemented by their wonderful interpretations of standards like their one of a kind Latin ballad rendition of Nica's Dream, or the chops heavy reading of Bud Powell's Celia or Kenny Dorham's Prince Albert. Jimmie VanHeusen's Like Someone In Love is sentimental, without being sappy. Everything feels fresh, and uniquely their own, which is obviously the goal of any jazz musician. Special guest, saxophonist Woody Witt adds just the right extra touch on 2 of the 8 tracks. The key to a record like this is the use of negative space and these cats know well how to make the most of it. A brave effort, yet completely accessible.

Mark Piszczek/Bamboo Philharmonic

Mark Piszczek is a singular voice on his instrument (soprano sax), but as good as his playing is, for me it's his compositions that are the primary element of interest. The scope of the opening track is epic and full of surprises. From there, we are led on a delightful trip which generously features all the musicians, and leads through the composer's many influences. The ECM record label was an important factor in Mark's development and that is on display, but there are also gospel, pop, and even classical influences throughout. The disc features Joel Fulgham on drums, Glen Ackerman on bass, Chris Cortez and Asle Roe on guitars, Andrew Lienhard on piano (who almost steals the disc), Woody Witt on tenor sax, Eddie Lewis on trumpet, Thomas Hulton on trombone, and Bob Chadwick on flute. Everyone delightfully rises to the composer's vision. I think of Piszczek as a modern day Gil Evans. Simply amazing compositions and arrangements.

Woody Witt/First Impression

This CD is a document of the auspicious first meeting of saxophonist Woody Witt and his group, and French pianist Franck Amsallem. Amsallem travelled to Houston, TX for this project, meticulously recorded, mixed, and mastered by Blue Bamboo Music’s owner Chris Cortez. 6 original compositions by Amsallem, Witt, and bassist David Craig, are augmented by Ornette Coleman’s “Chronology.” “South of Dallas” and “First Impression” are Witt’s two contributions to the playlist, the former setting the tone for the entire project. “Northern Face” and “Dear John”are both mature and deeply felt pieces by David Craig. Amsallem presents his observations on beaurocracy with “Standard Form Requirement.” His “Gotham Goodbye" is wonderfully expansive. This is a swinging collection, by a group of seasoned professionals, obviously hitting it off. Sebastian Whittaker’s drumming anchors everything beautifully, and with wonderful creativity. Craig’s bass is always well placed, in the groove, solos lovingly crafted with a master’s touch. Amsallem and Witt compliment each other beautifully. Witt has begun to amass an impressive discography featuring Tim Hagans, Randy Brecker, Ed Soph, Fred Hamilton, Lynn Seaton, and many others. Amsallem has recorded a CD with“A listers” Bill Stewart and Gary Peacock. Both men have laid impressive foundations to what are certain to be extensive and significant contributions to the best of contemporary jazz. Both are perfect examples of what Blue Bamboo Music is all about. Namely, brining recognition to deserving, developing, and important new artists.

Woody Witt/A Conversation

Featuring: Woody Witt, Ed Soph, and Fred Hamilton. A collection of eight original compositions featuring a modern improvisational trio of master musicians. Impressive resumes all around. All three are professors or alumnus at North Texas State University. Individually, they’ve backed up Stan Kenton, Bill Watrous, Woody Herman, Clark Terry, Joe Henderson, Marvin Stamm, Dave Liebman, Randy Brecker, Tim Hagans, Kenny Wheeler, Bill Frizell, Joe Lovano, etc. Hamilton plays both guitar and bass, but he is presented here without overdubs. The resulting space creates a breathtaking focus. When he plays guitar, the absence of the bass creates a certain dynamic. Likewise, when he switches over to bass. As a group, the collective makes the most of this and nothing is lacking. Quite the contrary. The recording becomes more compelling as a result of that space, and how these master craftsmen use it. Witt’s sound and compositions are lyrical, memorable, and ideal for this setting. Soph is masterful at the drums. All three of these men are at the top of their game. Their dedication is continuously on display and totally inspirational.

Chris Cortez/Awakenings

Featuring: Woody Witt, Paul Peacock, Joel Fulgham, Ryan Ogrodowicz, Glen Ackerman, Jeff Mills, Andrew Lienhard, John Wooton, and Mark Piszczek. After hurricane Katrina forced the guitarist to relocate to Houston, Cortez re-invented himself. His new CD is a collection of aggressive, original, instrumental, latin jazz/fusion tunes. Cortez burns on an acoustic guitar throughout 10 tracks, impeccably recorded. The sound is modern, fresh, and unique, presenting latin rhythms, odd meters, tight ensemble passages, and extended solos. The CD is a departure from Mum Is The Word (BBM007-2005), and Hold It Right There (BBM006-2004), in that it contains no vocals, and features Chris in a much more modern musical setting. Cortez’ spectacular guitar work is front and center, and all of the supporting cast deliver incredible performances throughout.

Chris Cortez/Mum Is The Word

Featuring: Sam Bruton, Jeff Mills, Edwin Livingston, Larry Panella, John Wooton, and special guests, New Orleans favorites, James Singleton, Humphrey Davis Jr., Dean Fransen, Billy Bargetzi, and John Reid. Following the success of 2004’s Hold It Right There, and 2003’s Groovopolis, guitarist/vocalist Chris Cortez delivers a blazing set of acoustic, straight ahead jazz. The disc is a mixture of vocal and instrumental tracks, including 5 new originals, and 7 classic chestnuts like Everyday I Have The Blues, Georgia On My Mind, Sweet Georgia Brown, Honeysuckle Rose, Manha De Carnival, Lazy River, and Avalon. Cortez’s originals feature clever, “tongue in cheek” lyrics, guaranteed to bring a smile. My Way Is Better, plays to “control freaks” everywhere. The title track, Mum Is The Word, touches on the pitfalls of social interaction. Bad Attitude presents a dead-on description of the musician’s life, and Rhythm Method Blues tells the story of a man with too many children. The Brazillian flavored instrumental, Trouble With Larry is at once, touching and energetic. Everything is presented with Cortez’s ever present, and quite spectacular guitar work and feral vocals, supported by Chris’ regular band, and special guests. As with all Blue Bamboo productions, this is an impeccable recording with just enough stylistic variety to keep things fresh and interesting.
